Life in the remote village of Naya Gaon, Tehsil Bap, Phalodi, has always been challenging, especially for women. Household responsibilities and traditional expectations often limit opportunities for women to explore personal growth or contribute economically.
Pushpa Kanwar, a 60-year-old resident, lives with her husband, six sons, and their families. Her two daughters are married and live with their in-laws. Her husband works in a company, while her sons and grandchildren are engaged in small-scale work.
Pushpa never had the chance to attend school and was married at the age of 16. Her life revolved around household duties and caring for her family, with no nearby employment opportunities to support them financially.
When the WomenServe and Local2Global initiative introduced the TAC program in her village, it opened a door for her to learn new skills and transform her life.
Catalyst for Change
Initially hesitant about stepping into training at her age, Pushpa gained courage from the support of WomenServe and Local2Global. She realized that age is not a barrier, and she could acquire new skills to contribute to her family.
With determination and resilience, she embraced the program and began contributing to her family’s income, while also inspiring other women in the village.
Skills and Experience
Artisanal and Creative Skills
Even though Pushpa never had formal education, she always possessed a creative spark and passion for handiwork. The TAC program provided structured training and resources that helped her refine her embroidery and stitching techniques.
Her work, known for its attention to detail and fine craftsmanship, has made her a respected figure in her village.
Inspiration
Pushpa was motivated by the collaborative spirit at TAC, where women from diverse backgrounds came together to share skills and ideas. The blend of traditional techniques with modern influences encouraged her to experiment with new designs and push her creative boundaries.
Personal Story
After marriage, Pushpa devoted herself to her household but always nurtured a hidden desire to contribute in new ways. When TAC training began in her village, her family encouraged her enrollment, helping her overcome hesitation.
She now earns an income to support her household, and her family is proud of her achievements.
“Now I stand on my own feet and support my family. I feel proud of my work and the respect I have gained.”
